Looking after yourself after job loss

5 minute readWellbeing

In short

Job loss is one of life's most stressful events, and what you're feeling is normal. Keep a routine, stay connected, move your body, and reach out early. Call or text 1737 any time, free.

What's normal

Shock, anger, shame, grief, relief, poor sleep and a loss of identity are all common. This is about your role, not your worth. Many capable people are made redundant every year.

Build a rhythm

  • Set a job-search block (e.g. mornings) and stop at a set time.
  • Get up and dressed at a regular time. Move daily, even a walk.
  • Plan one social thing a week and one thing just for enjoyment.
  • Limit doomscrolling and alcohol. Both make things worse.
  • Tell your whānau and friends what you need: company, practical help, or just to be heard.

See your GP

Tell your GP how you're doing and ask what support is available locally, and check whether a Community Services Card (which can lower GP fees) applies to you.

For partners and families

Money stress strains relationships. Agree a simple budget together, be honest with kids at a level they can understand, and share the load of job-search admin.
