10 minute readFinding work

In short

You can get free career advice from the Direct Career Service (0800 222 733) and help from Work and Income work brokers, even if you're not on a benefit. Some employers can receive subsidies to hire and train you (Mana in Mahi, Flexi-wage, Skills for Industry, Apprenticeship Boost), and the Transition to Work grant can help with job costs. Programmes change often, so confirm details with Work and Income.

How to make the most of it

  1. Ask for a work broker even if you're not on a benefit. Tell them your target jobs, locations and strengths.
  2. Book a Direct Career Service appointment first if you're unsure of direction.
  3. Ask: 'Which employers in my area use Mana in Mahi, Flexi-wage or Skills for Industry?'
  4. When you apply for a job, mention to the employer that subsidies may be available and refer them to the Work and Income employer line on 0800 778 008. Don't mention it before they've shown interest if it feels awkward.
  5. Keep track of who you spoke to and when. Ask for outcomes in writing.
