Subject: Hardship request - account [number]
Hi [Provider] team, I need to reduce my costs after losing my job on [date]. I want to keep my [mobile / internet] connection because I need it to look for work. Could you please: 1. Move me to your cheapest suitable plan from [date] without a break fee or reconnection charge, or 2. Pause or reduce my payments for [X] months, or 3. Set up a payment plan for the amount of $[amount] owing. Please confirm in writing the new cost and that this will not affect my credit file. Thanks, [Your name] [Account number / phone number]
Tips
- Telecommunications providers are members of the Telecommunications Dispute Resolution scheme (tcf.org.nz/tdr). It is free if you cannot agree.
- Phone and broadband are essential for job hunting, benefit applications and kids' school work. Say so.
- Ask about contract exit fees and whether you can move to prepay.
- Some providers have hardship teams and different phone numbers from normal support.
- Check for cheaper deals and budget plans from other providers, and for low-income broadband initiatives.
