Subject: Quick favour - looking for [type of role]

Hi [Name], I hope you're well. I wanted to let you know that I was made redundant from [Company] on [date] after [X years] as a [role]. It's not what I planned, but I'm focused on what's next. I'm looking for roles as a [job title/s] in [city/region/industry]. I'm particularly strong at [skills] and have worked with [types of organisation]. Two things would really help: 1. If you hear about anything that might suit, please send it my way. 2. If you know someone I could talk to about [industry/company], would you be willing to introduce me? I'm happy to write a short note you can forward. I'd also love your advice. Do you have 15 minutes for a call this week or next? I'm happy to return the favour any time. Thanks so much, [Your name]

Tips

  • Say exactly what you're looking for. 'I'll do anything' is hard to help with. 'Project coordinator roles in Christchurch construction' is easy.
  • Make it easy to say yes: offer a time, make introductions forwardable, and respond quickly.
  • Ask for advice and information as well as jobs. People are happier to help that way.
  • Always say thank you, and let them know what happens. Come back with an update.
  • Don't forget your old colleagues, suppliers, customers, school and sports club contacts, and recruiters.
