Subject: Offer - [Job title] - [Your name]
Hi [Name], Thank you for the offer for [job title]. I'm excited about the role and about joining the team. Before I accept, I'd like to discuss the remuneration. The offer is for $[amount]. Based on [my experience with X / the market range for this role of $[range] (source) / responsibilities including Y], I was hoping for $[amount]. [Alternatively or as well:] I'd also like to discuss [extra annual leave / flexible hours / a review at 6 months / training budget / KiwiSaver contributions / a start date of [date]]. I'm confident I can add real value in [area] and would like to find something that works for both of us. Could we find a time to talk this week? Kind regards, [Your name]
Tips
- Always get the offer in writing and ask for the employment agreement before you resign from or commit to anything.
- NZ employers must provide a written employment agreement, and you have the right to a reasonable chance to seek advice before signing. Read the hours, trial period, notice and restraint clauses.
- Be careful with trial periods. A 90-day trial period means you may not be able to raise an unjustified dismissal grievance, so check it.
- Research typical pay on careers.govt.nz, Seek, and with people in the industry. Aim slightly above what you'd accept.
- If money is firm, negotiate other things: leave, hours, review dates, training.
- Being unemployed doesn't remove your right to ask. A polite single counter is normal. Don't make threats.
- Check how any starting date affects your Work and Income payments, and tell them as soon as you start work.
