Subject: Support for [child's name], Room/Year [X]
Dear [Principal / Deputy Principal / Teacher / School office], I'm writing in confidence about [child's name] in [class/year]. Our family's income has dropped because [I lost my job on [date]]. We want [child] to keep taking part in school life without standing out. I would like to ask whether the school can help with: - [Uniform / second-hand uniform pool] - [Camp / trip costs $amount (could we pay by instalments of $[amount])] - [Stationery, device, sports costs] - [Food, lunch or breakfast programme] - [Spreading the voluntary donation or opting out of it] Please let me know the best person to talk to and how I can send details. I'd appreciate it if this stays confidential. Thank you for your support, [Your name] [Phone]
Tips
- State schools cannot charge fees for teaching, and school donations are voluntary. Parents can opt out; check the school's donation scheme.
- Schools often have a hardship fund, uniform bank, Kiwi Can/KidsCan support, or a staff member who handles this discreetly. Ask the school office or guidance counsellor.
- Ask whether the school has a free lunch or breakfast programme (availability has changed recently, so check).
- Work and Income may help with school costs through a Special Needs Grant or Temporary Additional Support. See the Work and Income templates.
- KidsCan (kidscan.org.nz) and local community groups can supply raincoats, shoes and food.
