Dear Work and Income, I am asking for my [Jobseeker Support / Accommodation Supplement / Disability Allowance / Temporary Additional Support / other] to be backdated to [date]. Why: [e.g. I first contacted you on [date] and was told [wrong information]. / I was too unwell to apply, and my doctor can confirm. / I didn't know I could claim and nobody told me. / I applied on [date] but the application was not processed until [date].] Evidence: [attach any: dated emails, call reference, medical certificate, letters, a text from a support worker]. I ask that you consider my application under the Social Security Act 2018 and backdate my entitlement to the earliest date allowed. If you decide not to, please explain in writing the reasons and my review rights. Thank you, [Your name] [Phone]

Tips

  • Backdating is possible only in certain circumstances and limited periods, and depends on the payment. Ask Work and Income what applies to your situation and ask for written reasons if refused.
  • The date you first contacted Work and Income can matter. Keep proof of when you first called, applied online, or visited.
  • If you were given wrong information, say who, when and what was said.
  • If refused, ask for a review within 3 months.
  • Free help from CAB, Community Law or a budgeting service is very useful for backdating claims.
