How to talk to your kids about losing your job

Other

Use it when

Children have noticed that something is different and you want to explain it calmly.

Fill in the [brackets]

YOUNGER CHILDREN (about 4-9) "I want to tell you something. My work has ended, because the company changed and doesn't need my job anymore. It isn't because of anything you did. I'm looking for a new job. You will still have [home, food, school, hugs]. If you feel worried you can ask me anything." PRIMARY / INTERMEDIATE (about 9-12) "My job has finished because [Company] made some changes. It's called redundancy. It happens to lots of people. We might have to be more careful with money for a while, so [we'll do X differently]. We're going to be fine as a family, and you can always ask me questions." TEENAGERS "I need to be honest with you. I lost my job in a restructure. We're making a plan, and money will be tighter for a bit. [Here's what might change.] I'd like your ideas on how we can all pitch in, and I want you to tell me if you're worried." THINGS TO SAY EVERY TIME - It's not your fault. - You are safe and looked after. - It's okay to feel worried or sad. I feel that way sometimes too. - Our family is still our family.

Tips

  • Children notice stress. A calm, honest, age-appropriate explanation is better than silence.
  • Keep routines (meals, bedtime, school) as steady as you can.
  • Don't share adult money worries or blame in front of children. Do tell them if something will change for them.
  • Tell their school or early-learning centre if your child is affected; teachers can offer extra support.
  • Check Work and Income for help with school costs, childcare and Working for Families changes.
